FAQ

What is Special Inspection or Deputy Inspection?

  • Special Inspection (sometimes called Deputy Inspection) is designed to protect the interest of the property owner, to ensure the governing building codes and jobsite documents are maintained. You can find information regarding Deputy or Special Inspection through your local building departments. As well as the 2001 California Building Code, Chapter 17.

Do I need Inspection?

  • Typically,  your plans and specifications will tell you in the “General Notes” or the detail section if you require Deputy or Special Inspection on your work.  If you question what is required, your governing City or County Building Inspector will be able to guide you in when you will need Inspection.

My grout in only 2000 psi, I don’t need inspection, right?

  • Wrong!  Grout is rarely over 2000 or 2500 psi.  Concrete and grout are NOT interchangeable, and are under completely different code sections, and different licenses for Inspectors.

  • Even though your plans state “concrete 3000 psi and above requires inspection”, that does NOT include your masonry components.  It is very likely that your structural masonry will require either a periodic or continuous inspection during build up; and ALL grouting applications may require inspection, since the psi requirement does not pertain to the MASONRY portion of your project.
  • If in question, it is highly advised to check with your building official, in order to avoid costly mistakes, and possibly having to remove and rebuild a masonry wall.
